Black Swan #2 -- Evangelicals Oppose Governor Romney

OK, maybe this is no more of a black swan than Governor Romney is a true blue conservative; but the announcement by a conclave of Evangelical Christian leaders in Texas yesterday that they were throwing their combined support behind Senator Santorum was highly improbable. I concede that their endorsement is unlikely to have high impact on this week's primary in South Carolina, i.e., it won't stop the Governor from "winning" or from grabbing more delegates by placing second or showing third; so I may be counting my black swans before they hatch ... :-)

Indeed, I find the support for the Senator from these hitherto savvy Christian politicos to be improbable precisely because I don't expect their support to have much impact on the votes in South Carolina or in any of the subsequent GOP caucuses and primaries. My mother, a born-again optimist, had two favorite sayings, "You can't beat something with nothing" and "Anything beats a blank." In this case the devout Senator brings no remedies to the economic table in an election held in the context of the millions of jobless voters in the Great Recession; whereas the Governor's experience as a job creating CEO may be dubious, but it certainly beats the large blank space in that section of the Senator's resume.

All things considered, if I were Governor Romney I would be delighted by my implicit rejection by the leadership of the Christian Right. If I get the most votes in next week's primary in South Carolina where more than half of the voting population have declared themselves to be evangelical Christians, I will have given a resounding demonstration of the current irrelevance of religious affiliation and anti-Mormon religious bigotry in the context of the Great Recession. More than at any time since the Great Depression, "It's the economy, stupid." But even if I "lose" by coming in second or third, by the end of February I will still be the front-runner with the most delegates and the most "momentum" -- basking in the media's marveling that my campaign is "unstoppable" and that my nomination is "inevitable." Invoking the Star Trek metaphor, if President Obama is the emotionless black Vulcan, than I am the heartless Borg ==> resistance is futile ... :-(
