We're fed up with the pandemic because we're suffering from COVID Information overload

Last update: Sunday 8/21/22
Way back in 1971, at the dawn of our new Age of Information, Herbert Simon -- one of the fathers of artificial intelligence, as well as a world renowned cognitive psychologist, and
a world renowned economist (Nobel Prize) -- offered a profound observation. When information becomes abundant, our attention becomes a scarce resource. There's just too much coming at us, too fast. Unfortunately, the leadership of the CDC, the FDA, and the nation's other pandemic management agencies seem to have missed this fundamental insight in their medical and bio science studies

On the other hand, they also seem to have missed discussions of another modern management precept: the absolute necessity to approach complex problems that impact broad sectors of society from a multidisciplinary perspective. Ergo, for two and a half years our pandemic managers have bombarded us with too much specialized information about the medical and bio science facets of their COVID guidance, while ignoring the profound impact of their guidance on every other aspect of our lives. In other words, they have offered us too much and too little information at the same time. No wonder we're fed up.

But the past week has brought some hope that help may be on the way. .
  • "CDC, under fire, lays out plan to become more nimble and accountable", Lena H. Sun and Dan Diamond, Washington Post, 8/17/22
  • "Walensky, Citing Botched Pandemic Response, Calls for C.D.C. Reorganization", Sharon LaFraniere and Noah Weiland, NY Times, 8/17/22
  • "In an effort to address its missteps during Covid, CDC plans an ‘ambitious’ agency overhaul", Helen Branswell, STAT, 8/18/22
As for the admission by the CDC's director, Dr. Walensky, that the CDC has screwed up big time for two and one half years ==> One cheer.

If Dr. Walensky soon announces her intention to resign asap ==> Two cheers.

But if she also announces her intention to fire all of the CDC's other top managers before she leaves ==> THREE hand-clapping, high-fiving, fist bumping, back-slapping, shoulder-hugging, foot-stomping, flag-waving, loud-as-thunder CHEERS!!!! ... :-)
